It is definitely a thing of beauty.

That being said, even beauty is subject to becoming "over-used",
a term a think Helvetica more than fits under.

Helvetica has extremely boring italics, apart from its lack of details compared to its original.

Helvetica is only a digitalized compromized Version of the Neue Haas Grotesk created in the late 1950s.

When Neue Haas Grotesk became the typeface we know as Helvetica more than 50 years ago, certain design concessions were made. Christian Schwartz, who designed the digital revival of Neue Haas Grotesk, points out that it “was originally produced for typesetting by hand in a range of sizes from 5 to 72 points, but digital Helvetica has always been one-size-fits-all, which leads to unfortunate compromises.”

Even Christian Schwartz apologizes on his homepage for using every possible excuse not to finish the Typeface because the italics were incredibly boring to draw.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of dudes like thin chicks and then a steady amount of guys like thick chicks... I'm sure the same applies to font and styles :P

Personal opinion

I think the beauty of all is in variation. The Ultra light fonts would be nothing if there weren't Bold fonts, and Bold fonts on it's own wouldn't be good enouth.
Thanks again for sharing your knoledge!

i would have to disagree with you on this subject.. imho if we are talking about the beauty of a font then it is mostly seen in a bold font. as it has the varied thickness and visible difference in inner and outer curves. the visibility of positive and negative areas decrease too much with an ultra light font. of course it adds some elegance to the font. an ultra light font is like those models on a fashion show cat walking, they are very thin and they look delicate and beautiful but they lack bodily features making them all to look alike. however a bold font or even a regular font has all the curves there is to represent clearly all the features of that font. and that is where the beauty of typography is i think. so basically i find the ultra light fonts a little shallow.
